Retaining Walls
Engineered walls that conquer slopes, manage water and add architectural interest.
Retaining walls do more than hold back dirt — they create flat, usable yards out of impossible slopes and manage water before it ever reaches your foundation. We engineer and build walls in concrete, block, and stone.
A retaining wall is one of the few landscape features that is equal parts engineering and aesthetics. Done right, it turns a steep, unusable slope into flat, functional yard, protects your foundation from erosion and water intrusion, and adds a striking architectural line to your property. Done wrong, it bulges, cracks, and eventually fails — usually because of inadequate drainage or a base that wasn't built to handle the load.
Culman Construction engineers every wall for the specific site: soil type, slope, height, and how much water it needs to manage. We build in segmental block, poured concrete, and natural stone, and we never skip the parts you can't see — the compacted base, the drainage stone, the perforated pipe, and the geogrid reinforcement on taller walls. Those hidden details are the entire reason a wall lasts.
For tall or complex slopes we design tiered walls that break up the grade and improve drainage, and we can integrate decorative caps, built-in steps, and low-voltage lighting. Walls beyond a certain height are built to engineered specifications. Every retaining wall we build is backed by our one-year workmanship warranty.

Retaining Walls FAQs
Why do retaining walls fail?+
The overwhelming majority of wall failures come from poor drainage and inadequate base preparation — not the wall material itself. Water pressure builds behind the wall and pushes it out. We engineer drainage into every wall we build to prevent exactly that.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?+
In many Middle Tennessee jurisdictions, walls above a certain height require a permit and engineered plans. We handle the engineering and can advise on local permitting as part of your project.
What material is best for a retaining wall?+
It depends on height, soil, and style. Segmental block is versatile and cost-effective, poured concrete is strongest for tall walls, and natural stone offers the most premium look. We'll recommend the right fit during your site visit.
How tall can a retaining wall be?+
We build walls well over 20 feet using tiered designs and engineered reinforcement. Taller walls simply require proper engineering, drainage, and reinforcement — all of which are standard in our process.
